Using the AP Stylebook

The AP stylebook is so influential, that the president banned AP from Oval Office events because they wouldn’t change the stylebook to his liking.

Knowing HOW to use the stylebook is key:

  • Look for the word itself
  • Look for a category
  • Look for a prefix or suffix
  • Remember special topics sections in the back
  • Some answers will be found in multiple entries

Let’s look at some examples. Where would you look if your quiz covered sections A-C?:

  • The storm caused a black-out that last for an hour.
  • It was a bi-partisan victory for the legislation.
  • The A.C.L.U. is a good organization
  • The scientist blamed climate change.

And a reminder, if you can’t find it in the stylebook, m-w.com is the default authority (the first listing is the default as well).
